Lemur Tales - Individual Module Descriptions:
|
 |
Discover LCF: In this session, you and your students will take a
virtual journey to LCF and the Myakka City Lemur Reserve (MCLR) to learn
about a number of topics. Discover the island of Madagascar and its
biodiversity and find out why it is sometimes called “the eighth
continent”. Spend some time watching video footage of lemurs at the MCLR
and learning about what makes them primates, the habitats and niches
they occupy and why they are endangered. Learn about the conservation
efforts LCF is taking part in locally in Florida and as far away as
Madagascar to protect these amazing animals and what you can do to help.
|
 |
Challenging Careers: Do your students think they have
what it takes to work at a lemur reserve with over 30 lemurs or to be a
primate researcher out in the field? Find out about the hard work that
goes into taking care of exotic animals and the challenging careers
available for people who help protect lemurs and other endangered
species in captivity and in the wild. Learn about the skills and
education that are necessary to have a truly wild career.
Students will also gain an understanding of the research process
and how primatologists go from question to publication.
|
 |
Amazing Adaptations: In this session, your class will
discover what adaptations are. Through photos and video footage of the
lemurs at the Myakka City Lemur Reserve, students will learn about the
unique adaptations that set lemurs apart from other primates, in
addition to finding out about primate characteristics. Learn about the
amazing adaptations lemurs have to the environment, predators and more!
|
 |
Habitats: Take a virtual trip to
discover Madagascar’s unique environments. Find out how Madagascar
compares to the Florida habitat where lemurs live at the Myakka City
Lemur Reserve. Find out about all the niches that lemurs occupy and why
some lemurs only live in specific habitats. Learn about habitat
destruction, its consequences and what people are doing to protect
vanishing habitats in Madagascar.
|
 |
Focus on Conservation: Ever wonder
what people are doing to protect endangered animals? In this program you
and your students will discover the island of Madagascar, its astounding
biodiversity and amazing endemic species. Learn why protecting
biodiversity is important on Madagascar and in your own backyard. Find
out how both the Lemur Conservation Foundation and the Myakka City Lemur
Reserve in Florida, 9000 miles away from Madagascar are making an
impact on this amazing island and what you can do to help.
|
 |
Lemur Lunchtime: What do lemurs eat? Learn what lemurs eat in the
wild, and how that compares to what they eat here in their forest
habitat at the Myakka City Lemur Reserve in Florida. Learn about
adaptations that lemurs have that help them forage for food, how we use
enrichment to make their diets interesting and how lemur food compares
to what humans eat. Students will also find out what it’s like to work
at a lemur reserve, how you make meals for over 30 lemurs and keep them
healthy and happy.
